A Note from Shalini

Hello again,

Sarika Waterfall
A cool refreshing trek to
the Sarika Waterfall

Summer break is over! Schools re-start in a couple of days here in Bangkok, Thailand. I feel happy I have set up my business in a way that allows me to work when I want, where I want and with whom I want! So in the holidays, I decided I was going to "work" a lot less and just hang out more with my kids, read and just take it easy.

It was a fun month filled with trips to the beaches, waterfalls, national parks, late night home theatre movies with popcorns, time with my beagle, Bruno, and listening to lots of music! Today, when I asked the kids, "are you sad summer break is over?", they replied "nope! Glad school is starting!" Well I'm feeling that way too- all rejuvenated, refreshed, satisfied and ready to get on!

This month I have an interesting article for you. I am sure you will relate!

Keep tapping! You have nothing to lose, and A LOT to gain!

"Should I, Shouldn't I"…that is the question

I am pretty sure you sometimes face this battle of "the shoulds"! I know I've struggled with this a lot in the past, and find myself still having this tug-of-war, whether the issue is small or big.

In the past it was "Should I go for the dinner with my friends tonight when I'm feeling tired and I'd much rather just lie in bed and read; should I say "Yes" to see a client on a sunday when I promised myself no "work" on sundays; should I say "yes" to a family member simply because it would make them happy (but I am not keen on it at all)". More recently, during my kids summer break as I consciously decided to slow down work, spend more time with kids and just take it easy, "the shoulds" were back! They said: "You know you should be working more"; "you should be spending more time finishing that project"; " you should be doing a lot more "meaningful" things than just hanging out and enjoying time doing nothing in particular!!" etc. etc.

And on and on "the shoulds", like pushy little monsters, keep marching into our lives creating emotional chaos and confusion.

What drives us to say YES! to the shoulds when we really want to say NO!? I believe it is:

  • GUILT, not JOY!
  • others perception of who we are, their expectations of us. (We feel "they" will think I'm not caring/loving/kind enough! etc…)
  • parental/societal conditioning of "being good" by putting all others ahead of us…which we equate as being "caring and selfless"! (against " self centered and selfish" if we truly follow our hearts.)
  • fear of rejection from others ( I should do this, if I don't do this, they will reject me! But we feel quite alright rejecting ourselves!!)
  • a habit of comparing ourselves and trying to keep up! ("I should do xyz, otherwise they will move ahead, accomplish more, be better etc.etc.")

So What Is Your "Shoulds List"? Write it down.

For each of the "should " statements you write, ask yourself:
  • Am I motivated by fear/guilt or love/joy?
  • Does this choice leave me feeling drained/frustrated or energized and eager?
  • Do I see any positive in this so I can line up with this decision and feel more energized than drained?

I believe that God wants each of us to be the star in our lives; to operate from love and joy as the basis of our life not from guilt, shame or fear! And I believe that when we follow our true heart's desires instead of what we "should do", we are fuelled with a powerful joyful energy that inspires, heals, uplifts and propels us and others toward more joy and happiness! Then, the "should" monsters slowly quieten and disappear into the nothingness where they came from.

So get on with what you really want to do. Life is short and it's time to stop letting "the shoulds" rule your life!
